About Dominion Ship Building

With over thirty years of direct industry experience, we have become a leading designer and builder of a notable array of commercial ships up to 450 feet in length. Our vessels operate all over the world and are suited for inland waterway or ocean service. Our specialization in the design and construction of passenger vessels, tugboats, ferry boats, etc., has enabled us to develop an unrivaled expertise in this field.

Our staff of naval architects works closely with clients to design a vessel that exactly matches their needs and requirements. We have numerous proven stock designs, can produce original designs to meet any need, or can work with a clients own architect or designer. Because we design everything we build, we have the capability to produce carefully customized: luxurious small cruise ships, tug boats, oil supply boats, restaurant boats, and passenger and vehicle ferries. Our coastal cruise ships are the largest built to meet U.S. Coast Guard and/or SOLAS regulations.

Facilities

As I prepare to retire, I often reflect on the journey Ive had as the owner of Dominion Ship Building. What began as a fully operational construction yard along the protected waters of the Ohio River grew into a facility I was incredibly proud to build and lead.

Our yard spans 13 acres of level industrial property with more than 2,000 feet of deepwater bulkhead. At its peak, we operated two construction basins, three side-launch systems, a ground transfer system, and multiple hull fabrication buildings and specialty shops. We expanded over the years, adding two additional enclosed fabrication buildings that allowed us to construct complete tug vessels in a controlled environment. These facilities were equipped with automatic welding systems, compressed air infrastructure, and integrated rail systems that efficiently transferred vessels to the launch ways.

Strategically located in Ohio, we benefited from a strong and skilled workforce and convenient access to marine suppliers throughout Norfolk, Baltimore, Kentucky, Michigan, Chicago, Virginia, Philadelphia, and Canada. That positioning allowed us to deliver high-quality custom vessels efficiently and competitively.

As the industry evolved and market conditions shifted, I made the difficult but necessary decision to streamline operations. Over time, this included carrying out significant redundancies to stabilize the company and protect its long-term viability. With construction operations scaled down, the yard and fabrication facilities have since been leased out, ensuring the property remains productive while reducing operational overhead.

Now, as I transition into retirement this June, I am working from home in an oversight capacity, focusing on a final project and ensuring a smooth handover of responsibilities. I take pride in what was built under my leadership and in the decisions made to secure the companys future. This next chapter allows me to step back from daily operations while still guiding the work Ive invested so much of my life into.
